Verb [Proto-Italic]

Etymology: De Vaan suggests a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₃emh₃-, alternatively reconstructed by the LIV as *h₂meh₃-. More specifically, the LIV supports a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₂em-ye-ti, which would yield *amajō, whence later *amaō. However, according to De Vaan, the Greek evidence indicates that the original root ought to be reconstructed with an inital *h₃ laryngeal. Phonologically, the sequence *h₃m̥h₃V- could yield a Proto-Italic form *ama-. De Vaan proposes that the term was formed innovatively from the affixation of *-āō to a Proto-Italic root *am-. Regarding the semantics, De Vaan suggests a development from “to take by the hand” > “to regard as a friend” > “to love, be fond of” to arrive at the Latin meaning. "etymology_text": "De Vaan suggests a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₃emh₃-, alternatively reconstructed by the LIV as *h₂meh₃-. Regarding the semantics, De Vaan suggests a development from “to take by the hand” > “to regard as a friend” > “to love, be fond of” to arrive at the Latin meaning.",
